MONEY FOR ROADS

MR. FURKERT REPLIES TO MOTORISTS HIGHWAYS BOARD DEFENDED Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. In reply to the South Island Motor Union’s criticism of the allocation of funds Mr. I’. W. Furkert, chief engineer of the Public Works Department, says the value of the works arranged for between the Highways Board and local authorities of No. 14 district was approximately £64.000, not £164,000. and the board provided £ 53.000. the balance being required to cover commitments already made. To show there had been no cutting down in the South, Mr. Furkert points out that last year the expenditure was £240,000 and the allocation this year £ 356.000, an increase of over 60 per cent. As a portion of the construction fund consists of borrow ed money, which must be raised for the board by the Minister, the latter is the final arbiter as to how much money shall be raised. With regard to not taking over a. greater mileage of secondary roads the board is already carrying a responsibility of 10,000 miles. Further, in view of the proposal for creating separate boards for each Island, the single board does not feei disposed to enter upon anything revolutionary, such as taking over another 2,000 miles of secondary • roads, even if it had the money.
