Press Association) (United, Service) Received 12.40 p.m. BERLIN, Sunday. rXGLAXD lost the right to meet the United States in the *■* inter-zone final for the Davis Cup by the cruellest of illluck, Austin being carried olf, owing to cramp, in the. deciding set of the deciding match.
Seven thousand spectators watched a keen, gruelling struggle, both Austin and Prenn rising to the top of their form. Austin’s difficulties began in the fourth set, when he was bracing himself to overtake Prenn, who was leading by two sets to one. Every game was marked by long rallies. The excitement was intense. By the eighth game, Austin was limping, and managed to win the set. He was obviously in pain. In the third game of the final set, Austin Slipped and fell. The crowd sympathetically called out to give him a rest. Austin, however, struggled on, limping. When running for a smash in the seventh game, he collapsed, ana had to be carried off. The umpire announced that Austin was retiring: because of cramp. The crowd bravoed Austin. Gregory was in great form and took 11 games in succession. Results are as under: In the singles, Gregory beat Moldenauer, 6—o, 6—2, 6—3; Prenn beat Austin, 4—6, 6—2, H— 4, 4 6, 5 1. Austin was seized with cramp and retired. In earlier singles matches, Prenn
beat Gregory, 6 —3, 6 —3, 6—2; Moldenhauer beat Austin, U—4, 6—2, 6—3. In the doubles, Gregory and Collins beat Kleinschrotli and Landmann, 6—4, 6 — 2, 6 — o.
