ORANGE AND BLACK
POWER BOARD HOLD FESTIVE DANCE Decorated in an effective scheme of orange and black, the social club rooms of the Auckland Electric-Power Board presented a gay and festive scene on Saturday eve-ning, for a plain and dancy dress dance. There was a crowded attendance of guests, who mostly elected to come in evening frocks. However, those who were attired in fanciful garb displayed much originality in their ideas, and the first prize was awarded to Miss L. Edgar and Miss M. Guy, for their excellent representation of the wellknown nursery pair, Jack and Jill. Animated music by Al. Clark's orchestra supplied the rightful note to the throng of dancers. Miss J. Beck, wearing a point d'esprit frock with uneven hem, and Miss Nellie AlcGra/th, in carnation pink georgette, comprised the women’s committee, and their energies throughout the evening were unflagging. Among those present were Mrs. H. Fletcher, Mrs. L. Richards, Mrs. MacLean, Mrs. Ellis, Mrs. T. Hill, Misses Muriel Tattersall, F. Anderson, L. Wood, Imeson, Newman, Townson, Farley, V. ENJOYABLE DANCE
SOCIAL CLUB ENTERTAINS The Social Club of the Electric Construction Company has a very energetic copimittee to foster the enjoyment of members for the -winter months, and the dance on Saturday night at Lewis Eady’s hall was equal to its predecessors in brightness and zest. , Mr. F. R. L. Humphrey, as chairman, was indefatigable in his attention to guests, and with the lively music of the Regal Five for the dancers, and cards in the ante-room for bridge players, a successful evening’s entertainment was assured. AMONG THOSE PRESENT Miss Coyle, the secretary, had on a sunset pink georgette frock defined with lace. Miss Ramsay’s frock was in pastel tones of pink. Miss P. Slaughter wore primrose crepe de chins with diamente. Miss M. Slaughter was in gardenia pink crepe de chine. Miss E. Dixon wore a dainty frock in pastel tones. Miss N. Coyle had on shell pink georgette with uneven hem. Miss G. Dunn, jade chenille embossed georgette. Mrs. C. Purdie was in jade green georgette embossed in silver. Miss Drummond wore crimson satin beaute. Miss TI. Clampitt’s frock was sage green mariette and silver. Miss Redfern had on a black ninon frock with gold embroidery. Miss I. Wigg, coral georgette, the skirt softened with handkerchief draperies. Miss B. "Williams, ciel blue charmeujse with salmon pink scalloped hem. Miss Moffat’s white lace frock had dainty touches of tulle. Miss Irvine was in almond green. Mrs. Howard wore sunset pink with crystal embroideries. Miss Stonhan was in white georgette. Mrs. Robertson, leaf green georgette with touches of silver. Miss K. Harrison's frock was white satin fleuri, with wide tulle bow. CRYSTAL AND SILVER Miss Webber wore shrimp pink ninon beaded in crystal and silver. Miss H. Gilfillan had on a black taffeta frock and vieux rose shawl. Miss R. Donalioe was in peach pink chiffon velvet. Miss A. Wilkins, opalescent blue and pink georgette. Miss G. Reid wore reseda green ring velvet. Miss C. Clifton’s pale pink ninon frock was finished with a large taffeta bow. Miss D. O’Connell -wore ivory charmeuse appliqued in a floral design. Miss Marie McDonald had on rose pink taffeta, the skirt edged with silver. Mrs. Granger wore black marriette with traceries of vieux rose. Miss B. Webb’s frock was delphinium blue floral georgette. Miss N. Stokes wore cherry georgette with gold hem. Miss M. Dunn, pale golden ring velvet. Miss H. Thompson wore lotus blue georgette with silver lace. Miss Edgar’s frock of cherry georgette was beaded in silver and crystal. Miss P. Le Clerc wore turquoise blue charmeuse relieved with primrose tulle. Social Evening Entertainment by Philistines
Music, Humour and Dancing Enjoyed AN UNUSUAL FUNCTION Mr. and Mrs. J. Y'oulin Birch were host and hostess at the social entertainment given by the Philistines Club on Saturday night. The Amateur Operatic Society’s Hall was well filled with members and their friends, and a particularly enjoyable programme was presented in informal fashion. A breezy reading by Mr. H. E. Gillespie, artistically sung duets by the Misses Laura and Ida Walker, solos by Mrs. Wallace Good and Sergeant-Major Hallahan, instrumental selections by the Misses Moore, and a humorous topical song by Mr. T. T. Garland (Mrs. Osborne accompanying), comprised the musical portion, while an amusing farcical sketch, “Aunt Sarah Calls” (written by Mr. Birch) was cleverly portrayed by Mrs. King, Miss Anita Webster, Miss Vera Palmer, Miss Mona Wallbank, Miss D’Authreau, and Messrs. Hartman, Newling and Harle Giles. Mr. Fred McCallum was stage manager. Supper was handed around by the committee, and dancing to the Amateur Syneopators’ Band engaged earnest attention till midnight. THOSE PRESENT Mrs. J. Y. Birch wore a pale apricot crepe de chine frock, with tulle flounce in floral design. Mrs. J. W. Wilson’s frock was cobalt blue taffeta, the skirt inset with gold lace. Mrs. Tan Simson chose apple green crepe de soie, gracefully flared. Mrs. D’Este was gowned in black silk, with beaten silver shoulder scarf. Mrs. IT. E. Gillespie wore a black charmeuse frock, with corsage of egyptian blue ring velvet. Mrs. Victor Macky was in beige crepe de chine, with bronze velvet coat bordered with fox fur. Mrs. Nello Porter wore black taffeta. Alig§ Mona Wallbank had on a striking frock of turquoise blue chenille, with handkerchief pointed draperies. Mrs. Wallace Good chose jade green taffeta defined at the liem with silver lace. Mrs. J. F. Montague was gowned in petunia crepe de chine, with touches of biscuit lace. Mrs. Greville was in jade green. Mrs. King wore bronze tulle, with pointed tunic bordered with lace. Miss Gillespie’s frock was white and silver. Miss Alva Bartley wore pale pink and silver lame. Airs. Hartman wore a picture frock of egg-shell blue georgette finished at the hem with richlieu embroidery. APRICOT GEORGETTE Airs. Gittos had on apricot georgette beaded in silver. Mrs. Buttle’s white fleuri frock was scolloped at the hem in apple green. Miss D’Authreau was in black. Miss Mackay wore ivory embossed georgette. Miss Laura Walker had on black alencori tulle relieved with camelia red shoulder spray. Miss Ida Walker’s black charmeuse frock was outlined with crystal and silver. Miss Osborne wore a black satin bridge coat over an embroidered frock of champagne georgette. Miss Joyce Evitt chose turquoise blue taffeta, with tunic skirt embossed in gold. Airs. Ovenden’s black laco frock was posed over pale pink satin. Aliss Alyrtle Burns (convenor of the ladies’ committee) wore slate blue chenille georgette with shoulder posy. Aliss Freda Goudin’s ankle-length frock was of shell pink shadow lace. Aliss Nell Gaud in wore pastel georgette, with velvet bridge coat. Aliss Kathleen Stokes wore a black ring velvet frock and oriental shawl. Aliss Lilian Quinn’s frock was of mauve frilled tulle. Aliss Marjorie Fraser had on ivory georgette. Airs. Hutchinson wore taffeta in cyclamen tones. Aliss D. Garrett was in ciel blue outlined with shell pink hem. Aliss Gilfedder had on a turquoise blue taffeta frock and begonia pink Crepe de chine shawl. Aliss Nancy Redstone wore an anklelength floral chiffon frock in tones of powder blue.
FABIAN CLUB
ADDRESS BY MRS. MACKY The cosy lounge of the Fabian Club was well filled on Saturday evening, when Airs. Macky delivered her lecture “British and American Viewpoints.” Air. Bernard Alartin was in the chair. The lecturer touched on several international subjects, but mainly the talk was of impressions of the different characteristics, America’s viewpoint being that of “Youth,” and Britain’s one of “Age.” The subject brought forth much interesting discussion which lasted until supper was served.
CARD AFTERNOON
PAPATOETOE CROQUET CLUB A large number of members and friends of the Papatoetoe Croquet Club attended the fortnightly progressive 500 afternoon held in the club’s pavilion on Saturday afternoon. After a series of keenly-contested games, Airs. J. Cowling and Air. S. AlcCullough were declared winners.
SCHOOL DANCE
TAKAPUNA FUNCTION The minor trials of school life were forgotten on Saturday evening, when the prefects of the Takapuna Grammar School entertained a number of pupils of the school at a dance in the Takapuna Boating Club quarters, Bayswater. Several novelty dances were introduced. The headmistress, Aliss AI. AlacDonald, and the headmaster, Air. C. M. Littlejohn, were among the guests. There were also present: Airs. Littlejohn, Mrs. J. Thompson, Airs. C. C. Robinson, Airs. I. H. AlcHarg, Mrs. R. S. Smallfield, Aliss Adams and Aliss Himmel.
