PUN FOR £25,000 SUBSIDY

Work on Western Springs Area

CLEARING AND ROADING

WHAT is considered to be a scheme on a practicable labour basis for tlie use of the £25.000 offered as an unemployment subsidy received the support today of Mr. J. 8. Fletcher, M.P. for Grey Lynn. The scheme is the subdivision of the water reserve area opposite the Western Springs.

To The Sun, Mr. Fletcher said that it was his view that the plan met the present demand for a scheme which would become an asset and provided a sound basis of labour. The difficulty in Auckland was the finding of an undertaking in which the labour absorbed would not take much additional money for material and equipment. The area opposite Western Springs was rocky, but this fact would allow the undertaking to proceed in winter. If the City Council subdivided the land, roaded it and laid in sewer and gas mains, a considerable amount of employment would be absorbed. Up to 500 sections would be provided in the land. Mr. Fletcher said. At a price of £2OO a section there would be a return or £IOO,OOO. The work was a definitely economical scheme. BENEFIT FROM RATES “The city would benefit from the

rates,” Mr. Fletcher went on to say. “The new tram route would pass the land and a public utility would be served in addition. The plan would be an asset and an investment, to my mind. A great deal of stone could be removed from the land and could be used for the Waterfront Road when it is decided to complete that project. “It is true that the area is a water reserve, but, in about two years, other water schemes will probably be so linked up that Western Springs will not be required. In the event of soft filling being required for some of the gullies, clean spoil could be tipped in.” Mr. Fletcher said that, were the plan taken up. the City Council would be able to make immediate use of the Government's offer. Some return could be expected from the work and the soundness of the labour basis could not be denied.
