“BROADWAY MELODY” MUSICIANS’ PRIVATE VIEW Til a amazing technical advances beins made in talkie production is strikingly shown in tlie Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer production, "Broadway Melody, ’ which was screened privately today before a representative Auckland musical audience. "Broadway Melody" is an important production ’ because it demonstrates conclusively that a musical show can now- be translated to the screen without losing any of its vital qualities. In it is to be heard the laughter and the throbbing music of a Broadway revue, and in addition a chorus of 60 specially chosen girls are seen in a glorious number accompanied by gay and catchy music. This particular scene, taken in technicolour, is the outstanding one in the picture, and so admirably is it done that the illusion of reality is complete. Apart from its purple patches, which in ke deep impression, “Broadwav Melody” has much else to commend it. The storv. most effectively written, has i Broadwav background, and concerns itself with the struggles of two sisters to achieve vaudeville fame. They are helped along the road by a clever voting song writer, but after a time a distressing series of complications develops." The end. however, brings a lrn-iliv clearance of trouble.
