Fast Rugby Expected
GOOD GAMES FOR EDEN PARK Manukau Meets Ponsonby PROVIDING the weather remains fine there should he every opportunity for fast Rugby at Eden Park tomorrow afternoon. On No. 1 ground two good games.are set down for decision iu the meeting of Technical College Old Boys and Training College, and Ponsonby and Manukau. Ponsonby and Manukau will meet at three o’clock and, although Ponsonby should win, a spectacular game should result as it generally does when these two teams meet. There is a possibility of A. C. Falwasser, Manukau’s former captain, making his reappearance with the team. If so, it will be considerably strengthened.
Technical Old Boys and Training College should provide a good, open exhibition for the curtain-raiser. Last week Technical made a good showing against Ponsonby and tomorrow they should make it a very even game against the Teachers. City versus Marist will be the game on No. 2 ground and this should pro duce even scoring. University will meet Grafton on No. 3 and Grammar and College Rifles will play at the Showgrounds. The Price of a Cigar
Before there was a Board of Control members of Australian cricket teams in England were fined if they were late on the grounds set apart for play. In 1889 Charlie McLeod, Frank Iredale and Syd Gregory were just about engaging a cab to take them to the Nottingham ground when a heavy rainstorm intervened. It was of such a character that none of the players deemed it possible that play could commence on time. So they listened to the voice of the charmer, in person of a local resident, and retraced their steps. The resident was a tobacconist, and insisted upon the players named partaking of one of his choice cigars, which he averred were the best in England. After enjoying the luxury of the precious weed, consuming much time in the process, as well as smoke, they casually sauntered down to the ground, only to ascertain that Darling had lost the toss and that the Australians were fielding. Their consternation was great, but it was greater still when they were fined £ 5 each for being late. They were unaware of the recuperative qualities of that famous Nottingham marl. Poor old Noss (Frank) Iredale said that while the cigar was a good one £ 5 was too great a price to pay for it. SOMETHING APPROPRIATE Rugby Union heads wanted the band to play something typically New Zealand to welcome the Maorilanders as they tripped on to the Cricket Ground last Saturday (says the Sydney “Sportsman”). But after turning the music book inside out, they gave it up. “Snowy” Dailey couldn’t help them out. “Haven’t got a National Anthem,” was his advice. “But try this one.” He then warbled a melancholy Maori chant, which was immediately vetoed. Somebody suggested playing “See the Conquering Heroes Come,” and another “Entry of the Gladiators.” After watching Saturday’s struggle, “Hallelujah, Shoo Those BLUES Away” would have jgeen appropriate. JUNIOR NOTES
Greater interest than for many years is being manifested in developing the Rugby game among the younger players in the lower grades in Auckland this season. Perhaps the most gratifying feature is the enthusiasm and keenness with which former representative players of .repute have thrown their energies into training and coaching the boys in the best methods. The lads are showing the benefit of the knowledge imparted to them, and are thus establishing a good foundation for Auckland’s future representative teams. Ces Baddeley, former provincial rep. and All Black, has concentrated in improving the Grammar fourths, with the result that the team is well in the running for the premiership. Otahuhu, another leading fourth team, is a further example. Six years ago tlie club fielded a team with the utmost difficulty. Today, eight teams, all of fine calibre, are participating in the competitions, thanks largely to the concerted efforts of P. Sheen, F. Arnold, and T. Muir, all of whom once wore Auckland jerseys. Having a bye on Saturday, Ponsonby A will fill in a spare day and keep their players fit by meeting a Manukau junior representative team at Papakura. The Ponies have a fine forward pack, and are developing good back combination, so that the contest with the West Coasters should be hard and keen. * * * Following an announcement in this column of The Sun that more representative fixtures were to be arranged for the junior grades this season, it is now reported that the first match will be played at Eden Park on August 3, when a Hamilton third representative team will meet an Auckland third intermediate fifteen as a curtainraiser to the Auekland-Waikato senior match. Favoured by fine weather, the junior competitions are now well advanced —further, in fact, than at this time last year, and if no Saturdays are lost, the union will be able to provide more provincial fixtures than formerlv.
