GREAT LANDSLIDE.—A landslide demolished a fishing village in the Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. The disaster was due to excessive rainfall. Houses, together with their occupants, were submerged by the sea, and 30 Persons lost their lives.—A. and N.Z.P.A. AFRICA'S COMMISSIONER.— The African Government has appointed Mr. T. E. Water, who at the recent general election was defeated at Pretoria Central, to be High Commissioner for South Africa in London, in succession to Mr. J. S. Smit. —A. and N.Z.-P.A. CRISIS IN RUMANIA. —It is reported from Bukarest, Rumania, that Hr. Julious Maniu’a Cabinet has resigned. A significant fact is that the boy King Michael of Rumania has been sent to Blet in Yugoslavia. He arrived there by the Orient express accompanied by his mother. —A. and N.Z.-P.A. .NEWSPAPER M ERGKR. —It was announced yesterday that negotiations are proceeding for merging the interests of Sun Newspapers. Limited. Sydney. and S. Bennett, Limited, which conducts the ‘ Evening News*' in Sydnoy. It is understood that the “News” will continue to be published independently of the “Sun.” STRIKERS WARNED —A threat by the Sydney timber workers on strike to institute mass picketing at the mills has brought forth a rebuke from the •icting-Premier, Mr. E. A. Buttenshaw, He has warned the men’s union that the Governmen: will not tolerate any intimidation or interference, and that drastic action will be taken against anyone who takes the law into his own hands.
