BOYS ON THE LAND

SOLUTION OF ECONOMIC PROBLEM PROPOSED CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SCHEME A suggestion from the Auckland Chamber of Commerce that a scheme be inaugurated for the purpose of pLacing suitable city boys on selected farms was unanimously approved by the provincial conference of Chambers of Commerce yesterday. The president of the Auckland Chamber, Mr. H. T. Merritt, in explaining the scheme, said that one of the pressing economic problems was the difficulty experienced by city boys in finding employment. The best solution was to put the boys on the land, and there was no doubt that many farmers‘would be glad to give employment to suitable lads. The Auckland Chamber proposed to compile a register of boys who, so far as the chamber could judge, were of the successful farming type. The country chambers could co-operate by making corresponding registers of suitable farmers. “There are plenty of positions offering on farms for boys of the right type,” said Mr. F. H. Clapham (Hamilton). Mr. Merritt went on to explain that the Auckland Chamber could assume no responsibility for the boy after employment had been found. It could only determine whether he was suitable for the work. The country chambers would see that good homes were being provided. The conference was unanimous in approval of the scheme, the consideration of details being left to the Auckland Chamber.
