Nelson Bingen Heads Sires Winning List CLASSY PROGENY By ABAYDOS After the fine record of leading 5 sire of the Dominion for seven consecutive seasons, the defunct 1 American sire, Logan Pointer, has this year been dethroned by Nelson Bingen, who on several occasions has filled the role of runner- j up in this competition. It was in the 1921-22 season that ! tlio Yankee importation first got his ; name inscribed on the sires’ merit list, sharing the honour with Wildwood . Junior, both horses having produced 39 winners during that year. That was the first occasion since 1916-17 that the great Harold Dillon had been supplanted, the son of Sydney Dillon having headed the list for five seasons in succession, his highest total being ' 59, gained th© first year he won the sires’ premiership. This was the second season of the competition, it having been instituted in 1915-16, when the mighty Rothschild captured the position with 41 £ winners. During the seven years Logan Pointer held the title, he was responsible for 496 winners, an average of just on 71 a year, his best tally being 86, registered in the season 192526. Wonderful Record Logan Pointer, who was by Star Pointer from Effie Logan, was imported to New Zealand in 1915 by Free Holmes, and it was decidedly bad luck for the enterprising owner and breeder that the American horse’s services were lost a few years back. In the last five years progeny of this wonderful progenitor of speed and stamina, amassed the magnificent total of

£125,533 in stakes, while this ‘ season £18,317 is entered to the credit of th© defunct sire, - making a grand total of £143,850 for six years, an average of £23,975 a year. During that period the Star Pointer horse was well and truly represented by such great pacers as Acron, Logan Chief, Onyx, Native Chief, Logan Son, Bonny Logan, Becky Logan, Loganwood, Prince Pointer, Jewel Pointer, Cardinal Logan, Logan Park, Pageant, while in Trampfast he left a high-class square-gaited representative. Nelson Bingen’s Success Nele-on Bingen, who this year Logan Pointer from his position at "the head of the sires’ winning list, is now located at Mangers, under the care of J. T. siast, Mr. E. Lelievre, and thej American horse has given the ’New Zealand turf some remarkable performers both In th© trotting and pacing divisions. For the five years preceding the season just closed, during which time th© Bingen horse was frequently run-ner-up to Logan Pointer in * the honours list, descendants of Nelson Bingen won in prize money £76,456. while this season he topped the beam with £19,726, making a tally for six years of £96,182. In Great Bingen, one of. his earlier gets in, this country, the imported horse produced a real champion, and one that soon made a name for his parents. another splendid advertisement for his feire, others of the Nelson Bingen breed that have proved their real value can be mentioned Sea Pearl, Nelson Derby. Nelson Fame, Nelson Tasker, Jean McElwyn, in the pacing business, while in the squaregaited department such high-class exponents of the .art as Escapade. Sister Beatrice and Kempton were sired by the American. As Nelson Bingen is still hale and hearty and will have young improving stock coming to hand each season, he should maintain the position achieved at the head of the sires’ list for several seasons.
