EMPHATIC PROTESTS
SUNDAY PICTURES AND ART UNIONS METHODISTS’ OPPOSITION Objection to the opening of picture theatres on Sunday and to the removal of the bau front art unions was voiced at the quarterly meeting of the Auckland Methodist Central Circuit held this week. The meeting expressed its regret that the Minister of Internal Affairs had removed the ban on art unions and emphatically protested against anv action of the Government in increasing the facilities for gambling. While endorsing the object for which pictures were screened in certain city and suburban theatres, the Rev. W. Rowe regretted that picture halls were opened on the special Sunday set apart to express thanks for the recovery of the King. He felt that the opening of theatres for benevolent purposes would lead to a demand for Sunday pictures for commercial purposes. The meeting passed a resolution urging the city and suburban local bodies to refuse future applications for Sunday programmes.
