NO AWARD RATES
PAINTERS AT HOBSONVILLE WORK ON AIRDROME (THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Would the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. E. A. Ransom) issue instructions for the payment of awardrate wages to painters at the Hobsonville (Auckland) airdrome? That was an urgent question put in the House of Representatives this afternoon by Mr. M. J. Savage (Auckland West). Mr. Savage said that the Government was paying less in wages than a private contractor would have to pay. The union had approached the authorities.
Although he had not had sufficient notice to investigate the case, said the Minister, the Government did not pay award rates, but wages regulated by the Uniformity Committee. With the privileges available, these were better than award rates. He was in sympathy with the representations, however, and would go fully into the position with a view to considering meeting the request.
