RIALTO AND REGENT, EPSOM
“THE JADE CUP” A high-powered telescope, through which the heroine watches the fatal struggle between the artist and the gangster, is the means of freeing the hero of a murder charge in Evelyn Brent’s Paramount release, “The Jade Cup,” showing for the last time tonight at the Rialto and Regent, Epsom, Theatres. The story abounds in original situations, gripping drama and has a breathless climax, with the menacing influence of a priceless Chinese vase hanging over the outcome of the plot. With Miss Brent doing some of the greatest emotional work of her career, and a leading man, Jack Luaen, who is a new screen “find,” the picture is one of the best yet made by Miss Brent. “The Battle of the Sexes,” the second big attraction, is a D. W. Griffith picture taking for its theme v .he experiences and habits of a typical American home. Jean Hersholt, Phyllis Haver and Don Alvarado are the stars. CORINNE GRIFFITH AT ROYAL Interesting glimpses of New York life among the working classes are shown in Corinne Griffith's picture, “Saturday’s Children,” which will be shown again this evening at the Roval Theatre, Kingsland. The comedy and drama of everyday life, with its economic and domestic problems, are realistically portrayed, and the plot furnishes considerable food for thought on the subject of companionate marriage. Miss Griffith is surrounded by an exceptionally able cast, including Grant Withers and Charles Lane. Thomas Meighan is the star of the second feature, entitled “The Canadian Pioneer.” The picture, “Coquette,” is stated to be the crowning achievement of Mary Pickford’s career. It is bound ‘o be an outstanding attraction in New Zealand as it is Mary Pickford’s first all dialogue film, and the film version of one of the greatest stage successes of London and New York, that will be seen in New Zealand for the first time. The picture theatres screening “Coquette” in London at present are reaping a harvest, just as they are in America.
