“EVO” CRASHES
HOME-MADE PLANE WRECKED SMASH AT MANGERE SPEEDWAY “Evo,” the home-made airplane constructed by the two brothers, Messrs. E. and A. Everson, of Herne Bay, struck a hill-top while taking off at the Mangere Speedway this morning, and was badly wrecked. The pilot, Mr. E. Everson escaped without injury. While the brothers have announced that on previous occasions they have ventured out on very short flights, it was their intention this morning to make a much longer flight. In the early hours of the morning heavy rain prevented them from making a takeoff, but, later, although conditions were still unfavourable a take-off was made from the top of the ridge. The machine left the edge of the ridge and rose into the air, but not sufficiently high for the under-carriage to miss hitting a small mound, a short distance off. This tipped the plane’s nose down, and she dived, to crash into the soft earth of the speedway some 60ft below.
