RAIL DUPLICATION

SCHEME TO RELIEVE UNEMPLOYMENT MANUREWA’S SUGGESTION The Manurewa Town Board decided last, evening to forward a letter to Mr. J. N. Massey, M.P., asking him to place before the Government the advisability of allocating £25,000 for the duplication of the suburban railway line south of Papatoetoe with a view of relieving unemployment. Mr. Gallalier, the chairman, said that the Government was able to allocate £25,000 to the City Council for the relief of unemplojmient and, in his opinion, it should be a straight-out grant, with local bodies finding an equivalent amount. It now appeared that the City Council had to find double that amount. A like amount could be well spent on the duplication of the south suburban line. In speaking in support of the proposal, members expressed the unanimous opinion that the work was an urgent necessity, and as the Government had the money available, strong representation should be made to have the work done.
