REMOVAL OF PORTER
TE RAPA FARMERS PROTEST REPLY BY OFFICIAL A meeting of Horotiu, Te Rapa and Te Kowhai settlers on Saturday protested against the decision of the Railway Department to remove the porter at the Te Rapa station on the grounds of economy. The following resolution was passed:—"That this meeting of farmers enters a strong protest against the proposed removal of the officer in charge of the Te Rapa station, as being inimical to the best interests of the community and the railway service, and a retrograde step. The meeting urges the Minister of Railways to see that no injustice is done to the district and to see that an officer in charge of the station be retained.” In reply to the resolution of the meeting, the district traffic manager, Mr. B. C. Housley, said that the decision to remove' the porter and make Te Rapa an unattended station was not made till the local conditions had been fully investigated. He said that there were a number of other stations in the Auckland district which were unattended, and which did more business than Te Rapa, and so far the department had received no complaints from the residents concerned.
