WILLIAM HEUGHAN
SINGER OF SCOTTISH SONGS Where it is a case of an avowedly Scottish artist singing Scottish songs, tho prejudice set up in the breast of tho average lover of music is tremendous. In one of the great cities visited recently by Heughan, one who considered herself very musical, was heard to say she had not heard him and was not going to. That is no exaggeration of what has been found on many occasions. Continuously Heughan has fought that prejudice. It is an injustice, as all know who have heard him, to think of him as the usual style of Scottish singer. He has been acknowledged by the greatest critics to be far greater than that, m fact “an incomparable Scottish singer and artist.” In Edinburgh the Press acclaimed him as “setting a new standard for Scottish songs.” In him they found a truly great international singer, yet a Scot —ono who gave Scottish songs as much study and thought as he would to any of the other great musical classics. Therein lies tho difference of Heuglun’s work. Few troubled before to think of what the songs meant, how they should be interpreted. They read the works from a book as they sang, anything was good enough for a Scottish song. Mr. Heughan will give recitals in the Town Hall on July 11, 12, 13 and 15. Tho box plan is at Lewis Eady, Ltd.
