WORTHLESS CHEQUES
MAN’S MANY OFFENCES ARREST AT HAMILTON {From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Today. A respectably dressed man of 38, ■William Augustine Logan, who pleaded guilty in Hamilton last week of forging and uttering a cheque for £l3 8s in the name of a Rotorut boardinghouse keeper, appeared before the Hamilton Police Court again today, when he pleaded guilty to four additional charges of issuing valueless cheques at Greyniouth, Nelson, Ashburton and Napier to a total value of £4O 17s. Detective-Sergeant J. Thompson said accused belonged to a well-known family in the South Island. He said he had been unable to find work and went South to Greymouth to try and obtain employment. He was unable to do so and he began to issue valueless cheques. Apparently, said the detective, he found no difficulty in getting foolish business people to cash them. Accused felt his position very keenly. Since his arrest he had given the Police every assistance. Sentence was postponed.
