RECONSTRUCTION
Sir, — I agree with “Hustle" that it is vitally necessary to apply the quality implied by his pseudonym to the job of reconstructing the earthquakestricken areas. The task should be tackled immediately and thoroughly. It is not even necessary, as the Prime Minister appears to think, for the Government to wait until the relief funds come forward from each centre. A conservative estimate should be made and the money anticipated. At the same time I adhere to my opinion that the time is l an opportune one for unemployment relief by a careful, proportionate selection of workless men from every centre. “Hustle” suggests that this would hold up the preparations for reconstruction, but I cannot agree. The Public Works Department merely has to secure unemployment figures from every New' Zealand main centre and call for drafts of men on a proportional basis. ’Hustle” misunderstood me in thinking I proposed that Auckland should supply the main con(Continued in next column.)
