N.Z. BIRDS FOR CANADA
EXCHANGE OF EXHIBITS CITY COUNCIL’S GIFT In exchange for animals presented to the Auckland Zoo the City Council is sending specimens of native birds to Canada tomorrow by the Canadian Transporter. This is made possible by permission of the Minister of Internal Affairs, as it is illegal to export without Government sanction. The Town Clerk, Mr. J. S. Brigham, said this morning that the council had secured two wekas, four pairs of black swan and two pairs of native grey duck. The birds were being sent to the Toronto Zoological Park in exchange for exhibits- for the Auckland Zoo presented by the Canadian National Park authorities about the time of the Toronto Exhibition. “The council has received a number of animals from Canada,” Mr. Brigham said, “and we have offered to send exhibits in return from time to time. We have had two lots of buffaloes, two consignments of beaver and a pair of mountain, sheen.” Thersjf had been a great deal of difficulty in acclimatising the beaver, and now theje was only one left, Mr. Brigham stated. The sole survivor was, however; doing very well, and Canada had promised another pair in the fall. The council intended to make a request for a young bison bull to replace the one now in the Zoo. It was not developing as well as had been hoped. The two cows had grown splendidly and were magnificent animals.
