KILLARUA ADVANCES

COMING BASKETBALL TEAM SATURDAY’S MATCHES Killarua is a coming team in senior grade basketball here. Although it was promoted from second grade only a few weeks ago, and despite the fact that its players are lighter and younger than those of other senior teams, this side is acquitting itself exceptionally well. In its match with Varsity Whites last Saturday afternoon, although suffering defeat at-the hands of old stagers, this team gave a splendid exhibition. The players are very quick and display excellent combination. The students played their usual superior game, and the match was the best of the afternoon. Mi.ss N. Jacobs fought well in the defence for Killarua and Miss L. Adams was another outstanding player for the same side. In the Varsity Blues-Training College A match a poor display was given by both teams. In defensive work Misses P. Norris and B. Morgan played well for the teachers. Waratah played wildly against Grammar, while the latter team’s passing work was both slick and sound. Grammar was much the superior side, and Waratah was beaten comfortably to the tune of 15 to 6. As. centre for the victors, Miss L. Scott was conspicuous. Play was not up to standard in the Y.W.C.A.-Training College B event. Y.W.C.A. was not as good as usual, players being both anxious and “butter-fingered.” Apart from the goal-shooting of Miss M. Ashley, there was no outstanding individual play. Later in the afternoon a “Possibles and Probables” game was played with a view to gauging the work of prospects for the team to represent the Auckland Basketball Association in the New Zealand Association’s tournament to take place at Christchurch about August 26. No score was recorded. Excellent form was shown, and the players are to be changed round and a similar match played next Saturday. The inter-club matches were also advanced a stage further in the lower grades. Results: Senior Grade.—University Blue, 17, v. Training College A, 14; Grammar, 15, v.
