Surprise Party

DANCE AT DEVONPORT 1 TO CELEBRATE COMING- I OF-AGE I MISS PHYLLIS BEST The Navy League Hall at Levonport on Saturday evening was the scene of a very enjoyable surprise dance party in honour of the coming of age of Miss Phyllis Best. The gathering was to have been combined with a welcome home to Apprentice Alec Woods, of the motor-ship Port Lunedin. but unfortunately the ship sailed the previous evening and he was unable to be present. Ferns and gaily coloured streamers gave the hall a carnival appearance and Mr. Jack Collins supplied excellent music. Miss Marjorie Cox played extras. Monte Carlo competitions were won by Miss Joan Best and Mr. B. Stokes, Miss Kura Clarke and Mr. Bartley. The guest of honour. Miss Phyllis Best, was frocked in beige crepe de chine, with shoulder posy and tulle bows. Among those present were: Mrs. Best, who wore figured crepe de chine, with lace trimmings. Mrs. Woods, black ebarmeuse, with embroidered mauve shawl. Mrs. Adams, in navy crepe de chine, pale blue trimmings. Mrs. R. Doble, who wore floral georgette, posy on shoulder. Mrs. A. Ferguson, who wore biscuit crepe de chine, and oriental shawl. Mrs. E. Johnston, in floral crepe de chine, with posy. Miss Joan Best, in pink crepe de chine and shoulder posy. Miss Ruby Woods, in salmon taffeta with silver net overskirt. Miss Mollie Cambridge, who wore lemon chiffon velvet with tiered tulle skirt. Miss Jeanne Sloane, wearing cyclamen and pink taffeta frock. Miss Joyce Gooding, in a lavender georgette ankle length frock with diamente relief. Miss Gwyneth Titchener, who wore pale green taffeta with uneven hemline. Miss Xance Watson, in shell pink ring velvet with wedgwood blue shawl. Miss Z. Miss Evelyn Bentley, in lilac ninon and silver lace. Miss Ethel Latta, who wore apple green taffeta. Miss X. Griffin, wearing rose satin with lace overskirt. Miss B. Beerc, in a shrimp pink brocaded satin skirt. Miss June Johnston, who was in pale pink crepe de chine. Miss I. Ardley, wearing salmon georgette and blue posy. Miss J. Langdon, in coral pink chiffon velvet and crepe de chine. Miss K. Johnstone, who wore maize georgette and satin. AN EMBROIDERED FROCK Miss G. Walton, in a hand-embroidered georgette frock. Miss E. Cordes, who wore eau de nil frilled taffeta. • Miss M. Rosenfeldt, who was in black charmeuse, relieved with flame. Miss H. Elliott, in powder blue georgette with diamente trimming. Miss Aves Johnston, wearing a pale pink crepe de chine frock. Miss X. Donkin, who was in black floral taffeta. Miss Grace Brown, wearing beige crepe de chine with lace yoke and hem. Miss S Carr, who wore green and cyclamen taffeta with silver lace. Miss M. Carr, wearing pink georgette with silver trimmings. Miss Myrine McMahon, wearing lace over satin. Miss Eva Pizzini (Hamilton), in blue georgette relieved with silver. Miss J. Andrew, who wore mauve and orange crepe de chine. Miss E. Carter, who was in pale green georgette with silver trimmings.

TOC H. PARTY FOURTH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATED Toe IT held a jolly celebi'ation party at the Jewish Club social rooms, Wyndham Street, on Saturday nightl in honour of its fourth birthday. An abundance of gaily hued streamers and balloons denoted a gay aspect and added to the colourful effect of dainty frocks. Miss Taylor’s orchestra, which gave its services gratuitously, supplied enlivening dance music, while the lounges were pleasant retreats for sitting-out. A delightful supper was provided by the energetic ladies’ committee. The padre, the Rev. R. G. Coats, and Mrs. Coats, were present, the latter wearing black satin beaute panelled with georgette. Mrs. Coats, senr., was in black silk with pastel pink shawl. Those present included:—Mrs. W. Haverfield, Mrs. A. MORNING TEA PARTY VISITORS ENTERTAINED FUNCTION AT LYCEUM CLUB Miss A. R. Quayle, secretary of the Overseas League, gave a very cheery morning tea party at the Lyceum Club for Miss C. Crichton Imrie and Miss G. de Burgh Pitman, who are visiting Auckland. Bowls of beautiful tulips and tall vases of irises and carnations added floral beauty to the lounge and evoked much admiration from the guests. Miss Quayle wore a smart ensemble of black suede cloth bordered with seal, and black velour hat. Miss Crichton Imrie had on a beige silk frock relieved with black satin, and a large black hat, . Miss de Burgh Pitman was in dove grey. Among those present were: Lady Sinclair Lockhart, Airs. ITolmden, Airs Clinton Savage, Airs. AlcCaw, Dr. Alildred Staley, Mrs. P. Crisp, Airs. BOWLING CLUB DANCE The fortnightly social and dance of the Xew Lynn Bowling Club, held in St. Thomas’s Hall, was attended by a largo number of friends. Alusical items were given by Air. Barnes and a quartet by the Alisses Laurie and Alessrs. Laurie. Airs. Barrett was the accompanist. Supper was provided by Mr. E. R. Edney, assisted by Mesdames Laing and North.
