STERLING. —A curious position arose recently in Adelaide, when the six-masted schooner Dorothy H. Sterling was abandoned. The vessel had brought a cargo of timber from the United States, but there were only sufficient funds to pay towage and meet the cost of discharge of the cargo and harbour dues. Nothing was left to pay the crew. The master left the vessel, declaring himself free from all responsibility. He was accompanied by his wife and son, the latter acting as chief officer, all of whom returned to the United States. The second mate and some of the Swedish crew remained by the ship, going ashore for meals, for which the American Consul paid. The second mate nominally took possession of the ship, which, in order to secure the wages and the passage money for himself and crew, he offered to sell for £SOO.
