DISSATISFIED TEACHERS

SINGLE SALARY SCALE ADVOCATED NEW POLICY CONDEMNED Expressing the opinion that there should be a single salary scale for primary, technical and secondary school teachers, the management committee of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute made emphatic protest on Saturday evening against the new salary scheme proposed by the Education Department. Under the scheme no addition is to be made to the sum allocated for the payment of primary school teachers. Some speakers suggested that there were Unjustifiable anomalies in the differing salary scales for primary and secondary school teachers. Another difficulty in the new scheme mentioned by speakers was the policy of compulsory transfer. This was objected to, even though it would obviate one of the defects of the present system—the heavy removal expenses which had to be borne by the teacher. After some general discussion the following resolutions were carried: That in consideration of any salary scheme there should he a single scale independent of whether the teacher is engaged in technical, primary or secondary work. That any salary scheme formulated should be simple in form and should provide for a range sufficiently wide within groups to ensure reasonable stability of staff. That salaries provided for teachers holding the more responsible positions are utterly inadequate. It was also decided to confer with representatives of the executives of Public Service organisations to gain information concerning other systems of compulsory transfer.
