PIONEERS FETED
DEVONPORT’S GROWTH On Saturday evening pioneers of Devonport attended the reception arranged annually by the Orphans’ Club. Some of those present were connected with phases of the early development of Devonport. Mr. T. J. Duder, one of the guests, was born in 1849 and was the second European child born at the suburb. He is now the oldest living European born at Devonport. The Hon. E. W. Alison, who presided, moved to the North Shore in 1854 and has been actively concerned in the growth of Devonport. Another guest, Mr. Joseph Mays, has been a resident of the suburb since 1862. Mr. E. Aldridge, Mayor of Devonport, and president of the club, spoke bn tho part played by the pioneers in developing suburb. Mr. Alison replied and short addresses were given by Mr. J W. Williamson, Mayor of Takapuna, and Mr. W. Blomfield, a former Mayor of Takapuna. Concert items were given by the club orchestra, under Mr. T. de Clive Lowe, aided by the Auckland Club’s band, and Messrs. Gemmell, Hallahan, Taylor. Lucas, Coombes, Buckley and Moody.
