Duchess Obliged To Climb a Wall

RAN FROM ADMIRERS TUMULTUOUS RECEPTION IN SCOTLAND The Duchess of York received such a tumultuous reception when she appeared among the 6,000 young guests she entertained at a children’s garden party at. Holyrood during her recent visit to Scotland, that she had to run for safety. It was whole-hearted and sincere hero worship, says the “Daily Mail.*' It came very unexpectedly. A more restrained gathering of children never assembled at such a monster garden party. They formed in sections to receive refreshments aDd yielded quietly to the marshalling by a detachment of High Constables of Edinburgh—a picked body of prominnet business men who assist at such functions. Dash Across Lawn But when the Duchess of York appeared, accompanied by the Duke and their suite, the perfectly formed ranks broke without warning and thousands of boys and girls dashed across the lawn chased by school teachers and the high constables in their severe morning dress. The Duchess was swallowed up in a huge crowd, the ladies of her suite were lost, and Court officials became frantic. The Duke and Duchess climbed one of the walls surrounding the garden, but on rushed the children, sweeping aside the band of the Scots Greys as though they were ninepins and completely swallowing up the kilted Camerons band. They clambered over the rock garden and made attempts to follow the Royal party, but the Duchess had temporarily escaped. A lane was forged through the mass, and, escorted by officials, the Duchess began to ruji, waving her hand all the time and smiling continually. When within ten yards of the palace she made a dive for the door just as the crowd closed in upon the Duke and those with him. The young loyalists surrounded the ! door and clambered on the palace I windows, paying no heed to the orders I of their teachers or the high constables. They hoped to catch another glimpse of the Duchess, but they were disappointed. Youth had had itH \ fling.
