HENSHALL SCORES
GOOD WIN REGISTERED IN STEEPLECHASE SATURDAY’S ATHLETICS Putting in his second appearance this winter, E. P. Henshall carried all before him in the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club’s three mile steeplechase at the Domain on Saturday afternoon, and after a gruelling race in a biting northerly wind romped home 50 yards ahead of the scratch man, J. W. Savidan. There was a big field of 22 runners in the main event, but by a sloty process of elimination, one by one the stragglers fell behind, and eventually pulled out, leaving only seven to finish the race. Clarke led the way with a handicap of 160 seconds and had as his associates B. Whitten and McNeil. Scown and Barker were off pretty well the same mark, while among the back rankers Kells went several seconds before his rival, N. F. Cooper. Savidan set out resolutely to make up the leeway. Henshall went ahead early in the second round, which saw McNeil in front followed by Whitten and Clarke. Barker had overtaken Scown, and Cooper was giving Kells three yards. McNeil still led at the commencement of the third lap with Henshall and Clarke running level in third place. Barker and Scown had exchanged places, and Cooper was now leading Kells by a good 50 yards. Savidan was still behind the bigger part of the field. The closing laps saw many competitors, including Cooper fall out. Henshall took the lead at the beginning of the fourth round and it was soon evident that the only man who was likely to trouble him was Savidan, who had now overtaken Kells and lay twelfth in the ranks. When the last lap was commenced, Henshall was giving Clarke a hundred yards followed by McNeil, Dowle, and Scown, with Barker and Savidan coming next, level. Savdan lengthened his stride, and scored going over the hill. Then ensued a long range duel between Henshall and Savidan, with the latter too far behind to have much chance of leading the field in to the tape. Henshall finished well 50 yards before the New Zealand cross country champion, who was followed by Scown, Dowle, Barker, McNeil and Kells in that order. They were the only men to finish. Savidan did the distance in the fastest time, 17m. 23secs. Scown’s net time was 18m. d9secs., and Henshall’s 19m. 9 l-ssecs. On their performance, all three of the first men home, bid fair to take a lot of keeping out of Auckland’s team to travel to Dunedin next month to take part in the New Zealand Cross Country championship meeting.
