Is Grey a Good Betting Colour ?
RECENT WINNERS IN ENGLISH RACES RUN OF WINS FOR GREYS Considerable discussion is taking place in England on the fact, that the three principle races recently—the Two Thousand Guineas and One Thousand Guineas at Newmarket, and the Victoria Cup at Hurst Park—have all been won by grey horses. These successes are noteworthy because there are comparatively few horses of that colour in training, says the “Daily Mail.” Ghost Train, the winner of the Esher Cup at Sandbwn Park, is also a grey.
The grey horse has always been more or less of a puzzle to breeders of thoroughbred stock. To get a horse of that colour at least one of the parents must be a grey, but it is never certain that the offspring of two greys will be a grey. The colour has become more popular with breeders of recent years, since the successes of the unbeaten grey horse The Tetrarch, both on the course and at the stud.
An English veterinary officer states that 100,000 immature calves die annually in Great Britain, due to contagious abortion. The annual loss he estimated at £1,000,000, but lie believed that 90 per cent, of the death rate might he averted if proper precautions were taken.
