WAIKATO SYNOD
PARISH ALLOCATIONS DISCUSSED MAORI REPRESENTATION (Special to Tl\V SUN) HAMILTON, Friday. •The Waikato Diocesan Synod continued its session today, Bishop Cherrtngton presiding. Archdeacon E. M. Cowie (Hamilton) moved: "That it be a recommendation to synod that parishes should be Assessed for diocesan finance on the Same basis as they are now assessed for missionary contributions, parishes to be assessed through the archdeaconry and rural deanery boards.” Defection was raised to the suggestion of assessing parishes and Abolishing special offertories. Bishop Cherrington said the idea of the mover was to entrust the rural deanery boards with the work of equitably distributing the liability for diocesan finance among the parishioners. After several amendments had been proposed the following was adopted: "That it be a recommendation to Standing Committee that the amounts required by the diocese from parishes be allocated to the different archdeaconries and rural deanery boards, Who shall advise Standing Committee «Us to the proportion payable by each parish within its jurisdiction.” On tho motion of Rev. H. K. Pou (Te Kuiti) it was decided to affirm the principle that tho Maori laity should be represented on synod and that the Standing Committee be requested to frame tho necessary qualifications for membership and the method of election. Canon E. S. Wayne, vicar of Waihl, Intimated today that he had resigned bis appointment as canon and chairman of the Waikato Diocesan Missionary Committee. He will retain his appointment as vicar of Waihi. Archdeacon Cowie moved, and Mr. D. Hay seconded, a motion, ‘‘That this synod desires to place on record its high appreciation of the valuable services of Miss Eva Necker, first headmistress of the Waikato Diocesan Girls’ School, whose personality and devotion have contributed so largely to the initial success of the school, and to express its very deep regret at her coming departure.” It was explained that arrangements had been made for Miss Necker’s sister to take charge of the school during her absence. The resolution was carried with applause. Archdeacon Cowie withdrew his motion regarding the religious instruction of children, and said the bishop was fully alive to the need of something being done in the direction indicated in the motion.
