SCOPE OF TAXI LICENCE
TEST CASE AT PUKEKOHE (From Our Oicn Correspondent) PUKEKOHE, Thursday. Whether a taxi-driver from Auckland can ply for hire at Pukekohe without obtaining a licence from the latter local authority, will be decided at the Pukekohe Police Court at the next sitting. As a test case, the borough council proceeded against William J. Buckley, an Auckland taxi-driver, today. The councirs solicitor stated that Buckley, who was licensed by the Auckland City Council, was carrying passengers from Pukekohe to the racecourse on May 11, and had a notice on the front of his car that he was plying for hire. Defendant claimed that as the borough was in the Auckland traffic district and received an apportionment of heavy-traffic and taxi licence fees, he was justified in offering himself for hire. He cited the recent case heard at Hamilton, the borough council at that centre failing in its prosecution against a taxi-driver from Tauranga. Counsel said complaints by the Pukekohe taxi-owners had prompted the council to institute proceedings. Mr. F. TJ. Lovien reserved decision.
