JUNIOR note:
The luck of the game. Gloriously uncertain, it swung from the undefeated Eden team in the last match of the first round. It fell to City to lower the colours of the championship leaders, incidentally investing the competition with greater interest. Eden
is still leading in A section with 14 points, though there is every prospect that either Ponsonby A or Grafton will draw level with the leaders when they play the extra game. Now that City have proved that the section leaders are not impossible to defeat, a better showing can be expected of them. * * * HOW THE TEAMS STAND The position of the junior teams at the end of the first round is a.s under:
With four teams separated by only four points, the competition in the B , section has reached a very interest- ■ ing stage at the end of the tirst round. Marist and Ponsonby B, who have both suffered one defeat, are on level terms with 16 points each. Grammar A following, with 14 points, and Technical Old Boys with 12. * * c After battling hard on level terms until the last ten minutes, Ponsonby B surprised Technical Old Boys by running up two additional tries. A Hardley, tlie Ponsonby second "five.” displayed plenty of dash and initiative in his work. He paved the way for both tries by well-judged runs. Lee, wing-threequarter, registered the lasi score by heady work, short-punting over his opponent’s head, regaining possession to score easily. Malcolm, the rover, L. Hardley and Campbell were conspicuous in the Ponsonby pack *-»r their consistent grafting. * * * Technical fielded a weak team and performed very well in running Ponj son by so close. The forwards worked hard throughout the game, and had a slight advantage over their opponents. Arthur Keane shone in botfc tight scrumming, and the loose rushes and received plenty of support fron Cobb and H. Pierce, who registered Technical’s only try. Dickey gave a bright exhibition at fullback, hand--1 ing the greasy leather splendidly.
The surprise of the day was City's victory over the hitherto unbeaten Eden team. It was a heavy slogging forward struggle over the whole distance, City scoring just before halftime, and resolutely maintaining it 3 Head to the final whistle. Eden forwards were a solid packing combination, in which Hulme, McGregor and DThompson, rover, were prominent for their consistent grafting. The inside backs were kept busy throughout the day on heavy defensive work, Inglis, the half, and Cowen, at first fiveeighth, standing up to the mulling particularly well. * * * The mud evidently suited City forwards, who certainly excelled themselves Smith and Phillips both figured largely in the scrum and loose. Harding was the mainstay of the rearguard, the brunt of the defensive work being borne bv him. * * *
