BULOLO BEST
REELS OFF VERY SLICK SIX FURLONGS RICCARTON TRY-OUTS (Special to THE SU2f) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. The star effort at Riccarton this morning was a striking gallop by Bulolo, a fancied candidate for the Stewards’ Handicap at Trentham next week. Partnered by Gay Sonnet, he ran from the 10 furlongs to the halfmile in the smart time of 1.17 4-3, and J though he was favoured by the inner I berth throughout the gallop, he was I going strongly at the end. Bonrose was another who galloped in her best form. Hopping off at the six furlongs, she did not begin to gallop fast till near the half-mile, but In recording 51 2-5 for her last four furlongs she did exceptionally well. On the opening day of the Dunedin meeting Bulolo spreadeagled the field for the St- Clair Handicap, but he is a vastly improved horse now. and his prospects of winning the Stewards' at Trentham appear very favourable. An effort was made to get him to gallop with Bonrose this morning, but as other arrangements had been made for the Bonidorf filly. R. Ellis matched his charge with Gay Sonnet. Both horses away at a fast bat, ami though Gay Sonnet showed the way early, Bulolo was always racing at her girths, and just before leaving the back stretch he got on terms with liis mate. Over the last 100 yards Bulolo gained a slight advantage on Gay Sonnet, and finishing strongly he was about' half a length in front at the end. It was an excellent gallop, which proved to be easily the best performance of the morning, and it reveals that Bulolo is in rare lorm for his Wellington engagements. Another Good Trial Full Feather’s fast seven furlongs in 1.32 1-5 also impressed onlookers. He really went a* mile, and the fact that lie finished so well suggests that lie is a near winner. At six furlongs he was joined by Sudden Storm, and the pair ran homo together. A. E. Ellis, who will have the mounts on Mister Gamp, Havering and Singleton on the first day at Trentham, has also been engaged to ride Sudden Storm, and as she appears to be getting back to her best a win for the mare next week will not be surprising. Limerick gave Belcaire about eight lengths’ start at the lialf-mile, but the filly waited for her companion, and they ran home in 51, with Limerick doing it comfortably at tho finish. Paquito was not all out to register 1.20 for his six furlongs, and over half a mile Don Jose registered 62 3-5. Aberfeldy and Gala Day were companions over seven furlongs, run in 1.35, but they were not nearly extended. Marsham, picked up by Arikiwai at the seven, ran home from the mile post in 1.47 3-5. Arikiwai again showed symptoms of unsoundness, but he was not nearly so lame as after galloping on Tuesday. Improving Filly Bonrose worked late in the mornipg, and though her companion, Thurso, who joined her at the half-mile, was of little use to her over the concluding stages, she wound up her task satisfactorilj’. For six furlongs she registered 1.19 2-5, but she came home the last four furlongs in 51 2-5, after scouting on the outside of the track.
Nightmarch was another who galloped well this morning, and in putting up 49 4-5 for his half-mile along the back, with True Shaft, he did really well. But it was also a good effort for True Shaft, and it shows that he is very much on the improve. Trainer A. McAulay formerly owned True Shaft, but he has sold the two-year-old to Mr. A. Louisson, who owns Nightmarch. Amorist galloped a mile in 3.48 4-5, and was going stropgly at the end. For her six-furlong sprint Sweet Refrain recorded 1.20. Lord Ranald and Gay Jim were together at the end of seven furlongs in 1.37 1-5, and for their three-furlong sprint Prickles and Royal Flower did 39 l-ssec. Oriflamb was schooled over eight fences and though he screwed a little at the brush and at the sod wall his display was very good. He looks better now than for some considerable time, and the first time he is stepped out in a steeplechase he will not want for backers. Hounslow a.nd The Viscount got to the end of five furlongs in 1.7 3-5, and over a furlong farther Mime occupied Lancer gave a good exhibition of jumping over five furlongs, but he got in too close at tho last obstacle, which he rapped hard. Radiate was given steady work on the sand. He is to be piloted by E. Shaw in the Wellington Steeplechase. Mr. P. D, McNab. who resigned from bis position as starter to the Canterbury Jockey Club some time ago, has decided to continue as that official for the metropolitan body, but he has definitely retired from the position of starter at several of the provincial clubs. Mr. McNab’s reappointment at Riccarton has been popularly received.
