ORDERS FOR LOCOS
OPPORTUNITY FOR THAMES r.!?„ SAMUEL’S QUESTIONS (THE SUN’S Parliamentary Be porter) PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Today. Mr. A. M, Samuel (Thames) asked the Minister of Railways in the House of Representatives today if there were any truth in the rumour that the Minister had been recommended by departmental officials to place orders in Great Britain for shunting engines; and, if so, did the Minister intend to carry out the recommendation? If the engines required could not be built by the Government workshops in time to meet the requirements of the department, continued Mr. Samuel, would the big engineering firm at Thames be given an opportunity to tender for their construction? Was it a fact that heavy engine repair work at Petone workshops was much behind, and that a heavy array of units was there awaiting attention. If that were so, did the Government intend uo allow repairs to accumulate while numbers of skilled workmen at Thames were unemployed?
