“CHAOTIC CONDITIONS”
RAILWAYMEN URGE NEED OF STATE CONTROL ROAD, RAIL, AIR SERVICES (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) Reed. 9 a.m. LONDON, Thursday. The conference of the National Union of Raihvaymen at Southampton carried a resolution, that the chaotic condition of road transport, the increasing accidents, and the wretched conditions of the employees, were a menace to the community’s well-being.
The Government was requested in the resolution to bring road, rail and air transport under national control as a single unit, eliminating competition and promoting economical development. The mover pointed out that the National Union of Railwaymen always favoured nationalisation of railways, and must now include the road and air services.
The general secretary, Mr. C. T. Cramp, agreed that only a comprehensive .scheme of co-ordination and nationalisation could benefit the community. The public safety alone justified a demand for nationalisation. Many road drivers were safer behind a macliine-gun than a steering wheel.
