LIMITING NAVAL ARMS
U.S. CONSIDERS OUTLOOK IS ENCOURAGING CONFERENCE OF THE POWERS (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) WASHINGTON, Wednesday. King George’s Speech at the opening of the British Parliament and the subsequent remarks of the Prime Minister, Mr. MacDonald, are considered in official circles at Washington to make the outlook encouraging for an agreement on the question of a limitation of naval armaments. It is thought that the prospects are certainly bright for such an agreement between Britain and the United States, and possibly with the three other great Powers as well.
Mr. MacDonald's forthcoming announcement is awaited impatiently owing to the belief that it will be most important. It is taken for granted that Mr. MacDonald will speak in more explicit and illuminating terms than he did yesterday. It is believed that Mr. MacDonald’s pending statement will concern the matter of whether technical or political representatives of the Powers concerned will meet first. The President, Mr. Hoover, apparently is working his way cautiously to prevent any abortive conclusion to the proposed naval conference. He is no less anxious than Mr. MacDonald to ensure that the conference shall be held in encouraging circumstances.
