Whippets Record
SPEED. RELIABILITY AND HILL-CLIMBING
As an example of the wonderful efficiency of the modern low-priced car, the Whippet four-cylinder model has been outstanding in this year’s local motor-racing contests. At the motor races organised by the Muriwai Motor-racing Club, and held on the Mangere speedway on April 27, two out of the three open events were won by the Whippet Four, which gained two firsts, and one second, in open competition from a large field. The ability of the Whippet to put up other types of records was demonstrated at the hill-climbing and reliability trials held on King’s Birthday w r eek-end by the Canterbury Automobile Association. The reliability trial was of ISO miles, from the East Coast to the West Coast of the South Island, and return. Whippet cars were placed first, second, and third. In the hill-climbing contest, Whippets were placed first, second, third, and equal fourth. The only other car placed w r as a high-priced six-cylinder car, 'which tied for fourth place. The winner, a privately owned and privately driven Whippet car, gained the full thousand points. Another interesting Colonial performance by the Whippet was run in Tasmania recently, where this car put up a new world’s endurance record. The engine functioned perfectly for 1,005 hours. With the bonnet locked and sealed the Whippet set out for a round-Tasmania trip of endurance and dependability. This test broke the previous w r orld’s record of 973 hours by 32 hours, and the distance covered over every possible class of road was 10,613 miles. Tho average motorist is not perhaps interested in these excessive speeds, but he is vitally interested in the specifications which enable the car to attain these speeds without danger to itself. The factors which make these wonderful performances possible are quickly found on examination of the specifications. They are: Small bore, long stroke, high efficiency motor, large drilled crankshaft, full pressure lubrication, bronze-backed main bearings (Chadwick type), silent adjustable timing chain, bronze-backed camshaft bearings, pump circulating cooling system, removable tappets, fully adjustable, honed cylinders, long connecting rods.
