HIS WATERLOO
ASSAULTED PLAIN-CLOTHES CONSTABLE FINE OF £2 IMPOSED Apparently William Robert McLaren was unlucky in his choice of someone on whom to vent his annoyance last evening. His attack on a constable in plain clothes resulted in his appearance at the Police Court this morning. McLaren, aged 40, of the steamer Gunbar, pleaded guilty on a charge of assaulting Constable Pretious. According to Sub-Inspector McCarthy, two constables, not in uniform, were talking to a sailor from the Emden last evening when accused had “butted in.” He tried to join in the conversation, but the trio had moved away from him. “He followed and asked Constable Pretious what he wanted to go away for, striking him on the face,” added the sub-inspector. “He was foolish to pick on a constable, even in plain clothes.”
A fine of £2 was imposed, in default seven days’ imprisonment.
