WESTPORT AGAIN SHAKEN
FUTURE SHOCKS FEARED ENORMOUS DAMAGE REPORTED Press Association WESTPORT, Wednesday. A number of severe earthquakes occurred today and again this evening. The most severe and most sustained was at 5.57 p.m., which again shook houses to their foundations. It leaves people uncertain whether the worst is over or has yet to come. Captain Burrell and Corporal Smith, a mechanic, returned this afternoon from Karamea, where they fitted a new wing to their Moth airplane, which was damaged as the result of striking a stump when landing. Mr. C. F. Schadick, Buller County engineer, telegraphs from Karamea as follows:—"The main highway from Tobine’s Bridge to Stuart’s Mill, approximately 20 miles, is obliterated. The damage is terrific. It is not possible to construct a road inland. A possible route is along the coast. It it impossible to restore telephonic communication inland. The damage to roads and bridges at Karamea is enormous.”
