DEFENCE MINISTER CRITICiSED Jt is pure politics—the shadowsparring: game,” was the terse comment of the Mayor of Devonport, Mr. E. Aldridge, at the meeting of the Borough Council last evening, when the Minister of Defence, the Hon T. M. Wilford, made a temporising reply to the council’s request for more consideration in Government grants in view of the fact that one-third of the borough area, monopolised by the Defence Department, is rate free. The Minister indicated that he wan placing the matter before Cabinet, but personally thought that the borough would be better advised if it ’let the whole subject stand over until the general question of Government responsibility in like matters was examined. The council thought the Mayor’s remarks were justified. A request is to be made for specific assistance on the road to the Calliope Dock, which the council has to maintain very largely for the benefit of the Defence Department,
