SECOND CRICKET TEST
ENGLAND AND AFRICA AGAIN DRAW FINE TATE-LEYLAND INNINGS (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) In the second test match between England and South Africa, Leyland and Tate made a magnificent stand and staved off the threatening defeat, even giving England a chance of victory. They scored 129 in 75 minutes, despite the valiant efforts of the South Africans. Morkel was getting much spin and pace from the worn pitch, and early middle-stumped Hendren, _ the ball coming in from the leg six inches. He similarly dismissed Hammond. O’Connor snicked a ball to leg and was caught. 5 —113. The situation appeared desperate when Tate came in and gave the pluckiest display of fireworks. He lashed Ochse to the boundary at the first ball. Leyland was batting more freely, hitting Morkel when he was again brought on for two fours, two in one over, reaching 56 in two hours. At this stage almost every ball yielded a run. The South Africans’ overkeenness was apparently affecting their play. The Prince of Wales arrived after lunch and received the teams. He witnessed Leyland and Tate complete their centuries. Leyland gave a good all-round display, with one possible chance when he was 27. Finally he was caught off his hand while drawing away from the ball. Tate continued punching runs in all directions and completed his first test century in under tw*o hours.
The South Africans were set the j task of getting 292 in 2| hours, in the presence of 10,000 spectators. They speedily fell behind the clock, the first hour producing 44. Christy brightened things up temporarily, but later Africa lost three for 25. Play was suspended because of the bad light at 5,45 p.m. The match was drawn. Canu ’~n was struck on the head by a r ball from Larwood, and was carrot! unconscious to hospital.
