AN EASTERN TOUR

DR. AND MRS. BREWIS RETURN SHIP PREPARED FOR PIRATES fJ'WO widely travelled people, Dr. and Mrs. A. S. Brewis, of Hamilton, returned yesterday afternoon by the Maheno from one of their periodical tours of the East. On their way to China and Japan they travelled on a steamer which was prepared for an attack from pirates. Rifles were carried on board, ready for instant use. The trouble apparently was that a wealthy Chinese was on the ship, and Ue was ratner nervous of an attack. Several of his equally wealthy countrymen have been kidnapped and held for ransom, and he evidently thought that he was intended for a similar fate. Dr. and Mrs. Brewis have been to Japan on this last voyage. They called at several of the coastal towns, and saw something of Yokohama, which has been rebuilt, and looks very prosperous. The Duke of Gloucester was visiting Japan when they were there, and he received- a wonderful welcome wherever he went. Mrs. Brewis was charmed with the flowers of Japan. “Although we were sorry to miss the cherry blossom,” she said, "we arrived in time for the azaleas, which were very beautiful.” Dr. and Mrs. Brewis called at Hongkong, where the people are all moving to a new residential town, Kowloon, across the harbour. They also saw something of Manila, in the Philippines. At Hong-Kong they were vaccinated by Chinese medical students, who are expert at their work.
