SCHOOL DETENTION

IS HALF AN HOUR TOO LONG? CASE IN COUNTRY How long should school children be detained after school in country districts? This was the question before the Auckland Kducation Board this morning when the teacher at the Utakura Valley School sought advice as to the detention of children after school hours. The teacher stated that the school closed at 3.30 p.m. and that on no occasion did he detain children after 4 p.m. The committee stated that, since an inquiry was made into cases of detention, no complaints had been received from parents regarding the detention of their children. The board decided to inform the teacher that it considered 15 minutes’ detention should be sufficient in summer, and that in winter other methods of punishing children should be. employed.
