ONEHUNGA WAR MEMORIAL
COUNCIL TAKES CHARGE The committee appointed to supervise the collection of funds for, and the erection of, a war memorial archway at the entrance to Jellicoe Park, Onehunga. recently reported to the Borough Council that its funds were practically exhausted, and that although the archway had been commenced, its completion could not be accomplished without further assistance. The Mayor of Onehunga, Mr. E. Morton, thereupon took the question in hand, and at his request. Mr. W. J. Jordan, JI-P-, inquired of the Prime Minister by telegraph whether the Government would be prepared to subsidise the amount already subscribed. The reply indicated that a £ 1 for £ 1 subsidy would be forthcoming. The Borough Council was then added to the membership of the Memorial Committee and voted £2O toward the project. At the meeting of the council held last evening, it was decided to take over the control of the finances and supervision of the memorial from the old committee and proceed with its completion. A sum approaching £l5O has already been subscribed by the public, and It Is expected that with the Government subsidy, an amount sufficient to complete the archway will be assured.
