“A SOUTH SEA BUBBLE” Lovers of romance amid strange doings should make a point of seeing “A South Sea Bubble’* before it finishes its run at the Grand Theatre. Treasure trove stories have a fascination for everyone, and this is a tale concerning a small party of adventurers who form a syndicate to find the hidden treasure of a long since dead pirate. They are led by a descendant of the old villain, who does not believe in the existence of the treasure, but is quite willing to accept the money of his dupes, and lead them to the spot “near the needle rock” where the old pirate hid his jewels and then lay down to die.
Ivor Novello is the descendant of the pirate, and he heads a particularly capable company, including Benita Hume and Annette Benson. The film is satisfying entertainment, and the island scenes are beautifully picturesque.
The second picture at the Grand is “Not Quite Decent,’’ an unusual story of New York night club life, starring June Collyer and Louise Dresser.
Sam Wood, who plucked Anita Page from obscurity for the leading feminine role in “Telling the World,’’ has selected another unknown girl for the feminine lead in “College Days,” an alltalking picture of college life which will go into production shortly at the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios. The new find is Sally Starr, a small, darkeyed Pittsburgh girl who has never before played In motion pictures.
