Jockeys Racing for Riding Supremacy
SOUTHERNERS ON TOP ! GOLDFINCH LEADS AUCKLANDERS j Six out of the seven leaders in the jockeys’ premiership were on winners : last Saturday, T. Green being the only one near the top to miss—then one of his mounts ran second. A. E. Ellis and R. Reed were each ! able to salute the judge twice, and the former is now two ahead of his younger brother, L. J. Ellis. Being able to ride on the, fiat and over the obstacles lias been an advantage to A. E. Ellis, and it must not be forgotten that he will be on Mister Gamp at Trentham next week. This in itself will give him a wonderful chance of adding two more points to his score. L. G. Morris was going strong in third place, but he lias to pay the penalty for crossing, so lias been j ordered to miss the opening day at Trentham. Reed is riding well now. but perhaps he has left his run too late. There is a big drop to IT. Goldfinch, who heads the list for the Auckland ' Province, four points ahead of the consistent TI. Wiggins. However, no jockey seems likely to threaten A. E. Ellis’s supremacy, and he should still be on top when the final numbers are hoisted. The meetings to be decided before the season ends on July 31 are the following: Wellington R.C., three days: Waimate Hunt, one day: Gisborne R.C.. two days; South Canterbury Hunt, one day; and the South Canterbury J. 0.. one day. abandoned at recent meeting. Cook heading the winning jockeys’ list this season. To succeed, however. Cook will have to show even more surprising results than in the last few weeks, for, including all metropolitan and provincial courses. Bartle still has a lead of 10£ winning mounts, and only a few weeks remain to the close of the season. But that the task is not an impossible one Cook has shown in recent weeks. Since the Moorefield meting on April 20. he has ridden 12 winners on metropolitan courses alone, against the two by the leader, and anything may hap- | pen with the lad riding with the skill of the present. He is enjoying that remarkable run which periodically comes to all good riders. In recent years Toohey, Bartle, Munro and Davidson have all enjoyed similar success for a few months, and the confidence borne of constantly winning has meant, much to the chances of the horses they ride. Bartle’s Bad Luck It is against Cook’s scheme of winning the jockey premiership that simultaneously with his good fortune Bartle has experienced a run of ill luck. The laws of averages say that it must end for Bartle soon and, if then, he ifldes even a few winners. Cook’s task in overhauling him will be severe indeed. Cook’s prospects of winning the metropolitan premiership are far better. He is only 65 winners behind Bartle there, and lie is quite capable of making up that leeway. Positions uf the leading riders are: Metropolitan and Provincial E. Bartle . . .... .... 465£ M. McCarten 36 *|£s W. Cook 365 A. Parr 2557 j J. Simpson 24 J. Munro . 235 J. Toohey .. .. .. .. 365 AV.
