’QUAKE INVESTIGATORS

EXPERTS ARRIVE AT NELSON PROBLEM OF BUILDINGS Press Association NELSON, Monday. Mr. C. Reginald Ford, of Auckland, and Mr. H. F. Butcher, the Wellington City Council town planner, and Mr. Mitchell and the committee established some months ago by the New Zealand Institute of Architects to consider the question of the construction of buildings to resist earthquakes, who arrived in Nelson on Saturday in company with Dr. C. E. Adams, Government Seismologist, have already inspected many buildings, and are going on to Murchison tomorrow to complete their inquiries. Mr. M. Ougley and Mr. H. E. Fyfe, of the Geological Department, Wellington, have also arrived in Nelson and will accompany the party. Mr. Ford visited San Francisco after the big earthquake there, and made a study of the conditions there. Seen by a “Mail” reporter today. Mr. Ford said: "We have seen nothing to suggest any cause for alarm in Nelson or in other districts subject to earthquake shocks, providing buildings are intelligently designed with a provision for resisting the lateral forces induced by earthquake shock, and when honestly constructed under capable supervision it is such a simple and such an inexpensive matter that no responsible person building should neglect these precautions. Dr. Adams remarked that, after investigation, the first estimate of the general intensity of the shock must be somewhat reduced in the Nelson district. j THE MAYOR’S FUND Contributions to the Mayor of Auckland’s earthquake relief fund still continue to pour in.
