TOMATO GROWERS CONFER

PROPOSED REGISTRATION Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. The annual conference of the Dominion Growers of Tomatoes and Soft Fruits Association commenced today, Mr. C. E. Pope presiding over 70 delegates from the two islands. The chief question discussed was the registration of tomato growers. Delegates were unanimously in favour of registration, but the question of a tax on a sliding scale and the position of those outside the association, who would be taxed equally with members if the legislation were passed, and other difficulties, prevented any decision being arrived at. The Hon. H. Atmore, Minister of Industries and Research, was present. He heard the views of delegates, and promised to be present when the problem forms the subject of a deputation to the Minister of Agriculture. Delegates gave an instance of the heavy rating under unimproved values in areas near towns, and Mr. Atmore forecast relief under differential rating.
