INDOOR BOWLING

TOURNEY FINALS TOMORROW NOTES AND COMMENTS By “VETERAN.” Tomorrow evening in the Methodist Schoolroom, Great North Roach Grey Lynn, commencing at 7.30, the final games of the Auckland Friendly Societies’ Full Rinks Tourney will be played. The teams still left in the competition are; Avondale 1.0.0. F., J. R. Johnston, skip; Alount Albert 1.0. R., R. Brodie, skip; Birkenhead B A.0.F., E. A. Harkin, skip; Birkenhead C A.0.F., F. Blackwell, skip; and Devonport 1.0. R., Geo. F. Day, skip. Play will bo conducted on the two lifer system; seven head games, ties three extra heads; final game 11 heads, tie in final three extra heads. As these games are always interesting to watch, and this year promises to be very close and exciting, a large gallery of spectators is anticipated. * * « In a recent article on indoor bowls it was stated that there were 2,000 indoor bowlers in Auckland and suburban districts, and doubt has been expressed in several quarters as to the correctness of this estimate. The president of the Association, in reply, says he has ascertained that one importer alone has disposed of over 900 Taylor Rolph bowls in the Auckland district. The figures from the other two importers were not available in time for this article. As the bowls are usually the property of the various lodges, it is quite easy to see how the membership of a lodge, say. even 100 strong, will be catered for by the possession of two carpets and two sets of bowls (32 bowls). Some of the lodges have as many as four carpets and four sets of bowls. * * * Another matter that has much disturbed the indoor bowlers is the comment of a writer, a spectator at the recent Full Rinks Tourney in the Drill Hall, Ponsonby, who expressed the opinion that it was practically impossible for an outdoor bowler to adapt himself to the indoor game as the games were so different in execution. As over 30 per cent, of the members are also outdoor players, and most outdoor players take to the game like fish to water, naturally this sweeping statement has caused quite a commotion. * * * In practice it has been found also that the indoor game is quite a nursery for the outdoor game, and each year many who had their first taste of bowls indoors, in the summer, join up with the outdoor players. Quite a number of suggestions of how to convince this writer and any who should i think likewise, have been made by enthusiastic members. Three of these being a challenge from outdoor members of the association to indoor members. and a challenge from outdoor bowlers to indoor bowlers, and an open full rinks tourney in the Ponsonby Drill ter in hand, and a definite announcement will be made in,the course of a few days.. Quite a number of bowling clubs have tried out indoor bowls on their own premises and have voted it 0.K.. and one club, Alount Albert, has had a most successful three nights’ tourney in its r»avilion.
