CITY DOWNS MANUKAU

HARD GAME AT SHOWGROUNDS In a fast game at Epsom showgrounds on Saturday, City gained a decisive victory over Manukau by 8 points to nil. Both sides started off at a great pace, striving hard to gain the upper hand. City rushed play downfleld but was driven back by French dribbling through and putting the ball out. The first try came about 10 minutes after the commencement of play, when Turei cut across the field. The City forwards heeled it and Allan cut through to score well out. Berridge kicked well and converted. Both teams were now fighting hard, play being at times rather rough. The second try came within a few minutes of the first one, Sorrenson just managing to dive over. The kick failed and the score became 8 to nil in Citv’s favour. Shortly after the change-over, Ifwersen (City) threw away a splendid chance by hanging on too long. Play surged up and down the field, first Manukau and then City attacking. Although both teams were several times within an ace of scoring halftime came with no further addition. MANUKAU ATTACKS The second half saw Manukau attacking fiercely. several good movements being spoilt by faulty handling. Bryers almost got through but held on too long. Maguire (Manukau) was conspicuous for his good rush leading. Turei proved his worth with his faultless handling of openings and his powerful kicking, which freed Manukau from some very awkward situations. Allen and Berridge both played good games for City, being several times within an ace of scoring. The handling of both teams was very faulty, the backs again and again letting their forwards down. Kahu played his usual brilliant game, figuring prominently in several good movements. Although Manukau struggled hard it was unable to penetrate City’s defence, and the final whistle found the score still 8 to nil in City’s favour. Mr. Kronfeld was referee.
