HALF-COOKED MUSSELS

WASHED ASHORE ON BEACH MAY BE DUE TO ’QUAKE Press Association THAMES, Today. At Whangamata, on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula, an unusual sight was witnessed last week, the beach being strewn with large green mussels, the shells of which were half open as though they tiad been cooked. Seabirds soon picked the shell 3 clean. The type of mussel washed up was essentially of deep-sea origin, and not the kind usually found on coast rocks. Local opinion is that this is the aftermath of a submarine disturbance.
