UNUSUAL TEMPTATION
LABOURER STEALS SILK STOCKINGS FINE OF £5 IMPOSED According to Mr. A. Smyth who appeared for him, Arthur Hawes had succumbed to a temptation to which he had never before been subjected when he stole eight pairs of silk stockings from a city warehouse recently. Counsel entered a plea of guilty, and Chief-Detective Hammond said that Hawes had been a labourer employed on a contract at a warehouse, when the thefts had been committed. The stockings had been found in the man’s house. Mr. Smyth urged that Hawes had produced the stockings immediately after being taxed with the theft. He was a widower and was supporting tw'o children in England. During the 11 years he had been in New Zealand the man had led an upright life and this was his first appearance before the court. “This is the first time such a temptation has come his way,” added counsel. “Hawes has lost his job. He will probably find it difficult to find another and I ask for leniency.” .
Hawes was fined £5, in default one month’s imprisonment.
